The University Council of the State University of Maringá (UEM), in a meeting held on February 1, 2021, awarded the title of Professor Emeritus to Professor Adelar Bracht. The title of Professor Emeritus is awarded to professors whose contributions have been outstanding to the University, to society and to the development of research, teaching and outreach.

Adelar Bracht, PhD joined UEM as a university professor in 1976. He obtained his PhD in Biochemistry from the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich in 1980, the same year he founded the Laboratory of Hepatic Metabolism at UEM. As the head of this laboratory, Professor Adelar was responsible for setting up and coordinating a team of researchers that boosted scientific research, which at the time was still in its infancy (or almost non-existent) at UEM and in the countryside of Paraná. Over the years, the Hepatic Metabolism Laboratory has established itself as a research group of excellence in the field of biochemistry, twice receiving funding from PRONEX, a CNPq program that allocates resources to centers of excellence in Brazil.

His leadership skills and visionary spirit were also decisive in the creation of the Biochemistry Department and the implementation of UEM's first graduate program, the Graduate Program in Biological Sciences (PBC), in 1988. He also led the creation of the Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry, which was introduced in 2010.

Prof. Adelar was UEM's first CNPq research productivity fellow, in 1981, and has been a 1A fellow since 2002. Among his awards, he won the Prêmio Paranaense de Ciência e Tecnologia in 2002. After 38 years of dedication to the University, he retired in 2014 as a Full Professor, a position he had held since 1992.

Prof. Adelar continues to actively contribute to the science and teaching of biochemistry in Brazil and around the world. Always willing to help those around him, he continues to have the unique ability to fill everyone around him with enthusiasm. His legacy includes, in addition to the hundreds of scientific articles and numerous books he authored, the training of many doctors, professors and researchers, now spread across various institutions in the country. For his students and colleagues, Professor Adelar is a great mentor. Still going strong, he is currently a permanent advisor and lecturer in the Graduate Programs in Biochemistry (PBQ) and Food Science (PPC) at UEM.
